Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease that can be managed and its progress slowed or halted with treatment.

Although glaucoma is a significant cause of visual disability and sometimes blindness, it is estimated approximately half of glaucoma sufferers in the community are undiagnosed. Glaucoma is underdiagnosed because in most instances there are no symptoms or reduced vision in the early stages.

 Risk factors for glaucoma include

  • family history
  • increasing  age
  • some medications

There can be other factors contributing to the onset of glaucoma. Having your eyes regularly checked, especially as you age, can ensure you have the opportunity to identify, manage and slow the progress of this disease.

If you wish to have your eye health checked please ring our Goodwood Eye Centre on 08 8377 7644.

If you have Glaucoma and wish to read more about procedures that will assist with the management of this disease see links to our brochures on Trabeculectomy Surgery for Glaucoma, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty and Laser Peripheral Iridotomy.
